What do you do when a cottage on a large site pops up for sale in your neighbourhood? You snap it up before the developers can! This is precisely what these clever owners did.

Tammy and Ewan lived just one block away, but their home wasn’t delighting them as it once did. It was cold, the garden was small, and their neighbours felt on top of them.

Typical of homes from the era, the cottage they bought was a rabbit warren of rooms with poor flow, odd divisions and additions. But the site was large, and it was next to a leafy park and had majestic mountain views.

The design process to this home just flowed. We were all exactly on the same page with what we wanted to achieve in terms of space and look. We extended the existing single garage to create a double garage. We made the huge pool smaller in favour of an enclosed patio. The rest of the downstairs was cleverly reconfigured within the original footprint. It went from a two bedroom, two bathroom home with study and separate living spaces with zero connection to the garden to a warm home focused on the back garden and embracing open plan family living.

You enter this home via a light-filled hallway with a beautiful floating staircase. The less-used study and guest bathroom were moved to the front with a flexible guest bedroom/ playroom creating a buffer between these and the living space. The open plan lounge and dining area flow onto the garden and the patio. A walk-in pantry and separate scullery make life easy for this young family of five.

We whipped the roof off to create an extra floor with two en-suite children’s bedrooms and a gorgeous main bedroom suite.

This home bears little resemblance to its former self, but it was important that a link was retained, a nod to the past, if you will. By maintaining the square-ish shape of the home and the raised stoep with pergola over to the front, we could do this. This also meant that the home, although basically new, still fitted in with the street and neighbouring houses. This is especially important in a heritage area.

From the first site meeting, Jenny gave us complete confidence in the whole building/design process with her great ideas and thorough knowledge of building rules and regulations. She took all our ideas and thoughts into consideration when putting together our house design and has developed a design which reflects our taste and ideas perfectly. We are thrilled to have found Jenny.”
